Did you know up to 60% of our clothing is made out of plastic? Did you also know up to 700,000 synthetic fibers get released into our waterways in just one wash? Overall, synthetic clothing makes up to 35% of the release of primary microplastics into our oceans. These all sound like pretty crazy statistics considering when you think of clothing and soft fabrics, you don't necessarily realize there can be plastics in them, and a lot of it. These microplastics that they release into the water can be particularly harmful because they are almost impossible to clean up and become integrated into the environment, even the food chain. In addition to microplastics going into waterways, America alone throws out 11.3 million tons in textiles every year. This leaves them to rot in landfills with the plastic breaking down into the Earth. This is why our organization aims to step in and educate about better and sustainable options. Sustainable textiles aim to reduce the harmful effects these cheap synthetic fibers have on the environment.
Now that we've gone over why they are so important, what exactly are sustainable textiles? There are a few ways to define sustainability in the realm of fabrics and clothing. The first are fabrics made from recycled, upcycled, or natural materials. These are better for the environment by contributing less clothing waste through recycling or upcycling and less microplastics in our waterways through the use of natural fibers. When it comes to natural fibers, it can be even better when they are organic. Organic fibers, such as organic cotton, use no fertilizers or pesticides in the growing process which leaves the natural habitat healthier and can improve soil quality. Additionally, organic cotton uses less water to grow than traditional cotton. Another way sustainable fabrics can be defined is through the use of an abundant natural resource, ones that grow fast and easily, such as bamboo. The bamboo plant used to make textiles can grow up to 3 feet a day, uses very little water to grow, and absorbs 5 times more carbon dioxide than similar plants. All of these qualities make this plant incredibly environmentally. Lastly, a way our organization strives to make our textiles sustainable is through single use alternatives (see more details below) and our children's Grow With Me line. Children can go through sizes incredibly fast as they grow, which can contribute to a lot of clothing waste. Grow With Me clothing aims to reduce this waste by fitting children for several years through adjustable features. Ultimately making it easier on the parent's wallet and the environment, so make sure to check it out in the shop! Furthermore, outside of our Upcycled line (where we strive for majority natural fibers), 100% of our clothing and cloth goods are made from American milled all natural and/or GOTS certified organic fibers.
